Richard P. Stanley Seminar in Combinatorics

Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Sheerr Room in Fay House, 10 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA

Speaker: Doron Zeilberger (Rutgers) Title: Three Mathematical Reverends that I truly revere Abstract: After briefly raving about Rev. Thomas (who revolutionized statistics), and Rev. Alfred (who revolutionized [what is now called] algebraic combinatorics), I will talk about my favorite Reverend, Rev. Charles. While his [mathematical] impact dwarfs in comparison, he nevertheless discovered a fun rule to evaluate determinants, and that rule, in turn, lead to the invention of my favorite combinatorial object.
