John Constable and the Outdoors: Writing about Drawing

In conjunction with the exhibition On Location: Drawing the Outdoors, author and scholar Susan Owens will share John Constable’s sketches, paintings, diaries, and letters to trace the creative process of a painter in love with nature. In conversation with curator Joachim Homann, she will discuss sketching outside, looking, and writing. This lecture will be recorded and made available for online viewing; check back shortly after the event for the link to view the recording. On Location: Drawing the Outdoors features drawings by J. M. W. Turner, John Constable, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh, among many others. The exhibition is on view from September 18, 2026 to January 17, 2027.
